    Alex Hernandez was born in Miami, Florida on Sept. 20th 1977. He began studying guitar at the age of 8 and switched to the bass guitar at age 13. Alex played in numerous rock and pop band throughout his early years, while continuing his music studies. In High School, Alex began playing the upright bass, studied advanced music theory and harmony and performed in the school's rock ensemble as well as the jazz big band. Alex received full musical scholarships to attend both the Miami Dade Community College and Florida International University. He studied with Bassist Matt Bonelli (the Bee Gees), and Dennis Marks (Arturo Sandoval) as well as some occasional private lessons with artists who came to town often. From the age of 17 to 23 Alex performed in and around the South Florida area with some of the rising stars in the Miami Jazz scene as well as some legendary jazz musicians such as Ira Sullivan, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Dolph and Tony Castellano, Nestor Torres, Arturo Sandoval, Ignacio Berroa, Gary Campbell and Pete Minger ... as well as backing artists like Peboe Bryson, Juan Pablo Torres, Dr. Billy Taylor. In 2000 Alex went to Mallorca, Spain for what was to be a 6 month summer gig. Seeing it as an opportunity to see more of the world, Alex moved out to Madrid after his 6 month contract was done. Alex immediately began working with Latin Jazz Trumpeter/Percussionist Jerry Gonzales ( of the Fort Apache Band ) who had gained a lot of fame in Spain and Europe from his appearance in the film "Calle 54". Working with Jerry led to performances, touring and a great record with Flamenco phenom Diego "El Cigala". In 2001 they recorded "Corren Tiempos de Alegria" (BMG) featuring the great cuban pianist Bebo Valdes ( father of Chucho Valdes), Jerry Gonzales and Alex on bass. In only a few short years, Alex became one of the top session bassist in Madrid, playing on numerous jazz and flamenco albums, as well as music for tv, film and commercials. From 2002 and 2003 Alex toured the world with Spanish singer/songwriter Joan Manuel Serrat on his "Versos en la Boca'' Tour. In 2003 Alex moved to NYC to perssue his career in one of the greatest cities in the world. Since landing in NYC almost 8 years ago, Alex has played with the likes of Manny Duran, Jeremy Pelt, Ravi Coltrane, Hector Martignon, Wynton Marsalis, Russell Malone, Stafford Hunter,Roswell Rudd, the Rodriguez Brothers, Mayra Casales, Maya Azucena, Aaron Thurston, The Engagements, Martin Bejerano, Joel Frahm, Piro Rodriguez, Steve Berrios, Xiomara Laugart, Ray Barreto, Candido Camero, John Faddis, Paquito D'Rivera, Octavio Kotan and many more. For 5 years, Alex held the bass chair with Drummer/Percussionist Bobby Sanabria and was featured on his 2008 Grammy Nominated "Big Band Urban Folktales" as well as the 2006 Modern Drummer DVD. He currently performs regularly with the Sugar Hill Quartet, and leads his own trio on Sundays at the Stone House in NJ. Alex is currently planning his first release as a leader in early 2012. I was born in Miami, Florida on Sept. 20th 1977. My parents are both cuban imigrants who found each other in the South Florida area. Although I am the only proffesional musician in my immediate family, My folks have always been music lovers, so music has always been a part of my life. I started playing Guitar at age 8, and switched over to Bass Guitar at 13. At 18 I picked up the Upright bass. Most of my teen years were spent playing Rock and Heavy Metal, as well as some Jazz and Fusion in my early college years. In my early 20's I spent 3 years living and giging in Spain. In 2003 I moved to NYC to become the best musician I can be !!! ..............................................................................
