  • Sounds Like

TIME ZONE: ..."there is an intriguingly saturnine quality in both the leader's compositions and the band's execution, a sense of hard-edged modernity that has a side-winding thrust reminiscent of Dave Holland's ensemble at times... an impressive, mature debut by an ensemble led by a trumpeter/composer who has absorbed the essence of Cuban music and distilled it quite cunningly into an improvisatory context with no compromise to either culture. The result is gritty, graceful sounds with a dark-light intensity." ........ KEVIN LEGENDRE, Echoes, CD review .................................................................................................................. .............................................................................................................................................. INNER SPACE MUSIC: "...one of the happiest evenings I've heard in jazz for many a long night. Like all the best innovators, they're hard to categorise. I haven't heard a band who made my feet itch so much I wanted to get up and dance, though the shifting time signatures and floating barlines of their rhythms might make it a bit difficult... Though the front-line focus shifts from Biscoe to Speyer and back again, there are very few solos as such, mainly ensemble playing with a sensuousness reminiscent of the way New Orleans cornet and clarinet interweave. Oh! What's the use. Music as rare as this defies description. Go along and see them! Or get their forthcoming CD..." ...... KARL DALLAS, the Morning Star, live review
