  • Bio

-------------------------------------------------------------------

About : DOUBLE ALBUM - SNEEUW -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SPECIAL MINIMALISM - EXPERIMENTAL - COMPUTER MUSIC ...ETC..... [NEW RELEASE 2010]-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In This Double Album : French Cellist : JEAN-MICHEL MOULIN (Musician of the New Patrick Dorobisz Ensemble) Japanese marimbist : AIKO MIYAMOTO (Musician of the New Patrick Dorobisz Ensemble) Flemish Pianist : VERONIQUE VANHOUCKE (Musician of the New Patrick Dorobisz Ensemble) This double album is a photograph of my music. It is a photo which represents my different creative areas well. I have chosen the pieces that are the most representative of my music, from computer music to my repetitive music through a conceptual piece like Wagner Express. There are pieces for solo instrument, for chamber orchestra, for computer or for tape. .. I also designed this album as an installation, not a sound installation but a musical installation, often by defining a geographical space in time, such as a piece for 4 pianos for example, or 4 cellos or 4 organs...that is, 4 points in space. However this is no longer the street or a modern art centre, but musical time. .. Even so, writing in my head for 4 pianos is still like making an installation in an art gallery for me. .. It is a poetic rendition of my artistic thinking about minimal art. It is also a way of questioning musical time, as the white square on a white background can be, but in its two-dimensional space. This is why the 2nd title of the album is sneeuw, which means “snow” in Dutch, hence the white, and there is also a curve in the phonetics of this word which corresponds to the instrumental gesture, to movement in time. .. In these pieces that I have chosen, I often make reference to plastic organisational principles (pop art, minimal art, land art, conceptual art, abstract painting) but also to architecture and sculpture. These are in fact the foundations of my musical creation. It is an album that makes reference to art but is also a nod to the technologies that started with analog and go all the way to the computer with its different forms of sound synthesis - analog synthesis, Fm, sampling, physical modelling...etc. As for the tools, they are as varied as vinyl records, tape recorders, floppy disks or hard disk recording, but always in counterpoint with the acoustic instruments, naturally. Humanity is at the centre of my approach. My musical journey is also punctuated by poetry, which I project here in sound form, as if I were projecting words and emotions onto a musical stave. Patrick Dorobisz 2010 FROM THE JOURNAL OF PATRICK DOROBISZ, remarking on his recent work, EXTENDED GAMES (2009): "Extended Games" is a musical painting: I first reflected upon an image comprised of various forms, colours, lines and textures. After reflecting, I went on to draw out these variances, then made a large canvas print from a laser printer. Thereafter, reworked the printed canvas by overlaying oil and acrylic paints so that the image's spectrum would extend and augment. ..As the painting yields two universes placed side by side-- the Virtual and the Real, the music process mirrored the painting's movements. These two mediums are not companion pieces but expansions of one another. To transmigrate visual to musical, I recorded a few bars of a cello while contemplating on the painting. .. Once the cello track was digitally recorded into a computer's audio application, the score was printed and modified while adjustments were made to the painting. Concurrently, I rewrote the cello's score while adding touches to the painting, keeping these effects in Real Time while counterpointing between electronic sounds/colours/forms and lines between the cello's notes and painting's hues.” ..

Composer Patrick Dorobisz

French Minimalist composer, Patrick Dorobisz was born from Lithuanian Parents in the north of France . His interests in music, drawing and painting developed at an early age : Conservatory of music and Art school.
Dorobisz studied architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts, where he began producing his first repetitive electro-acoustic music compositions and sound installations. During the 70s, he experimented with analog devices of the time, combining early synthesizers and tape recorders.
He was also guitar player (1971-1973) in the progressive rock band
Johns-Omintone.
Come the 80s, reprocessed this dischord with computer technology, and by the 90s, pursued digital reconstruction of acoustic models, further exploring dynamic harmonics. Dorobisz is presently working with these diverse music systems by targeting the familiar-- classical instruments supported by a live, traditional quartet. chamber orchestra, Live electronic. All various aural locales, is, as Dorobisz says, "a chance for us to discover imaginary sound spaces which are different every time... Universes within musical architecture derives, above all, from pictorial research."

After obtaining a diploma in architecture Dorobisz, received a National Diploma in Fine Arts, in 1976, he began transferring themes inspired from art and architecture into music. His first definitive piece, john's Collage 1973,' is the result of assembling collages of magnetic tapes for the progressive rock group, john's. This music experiment employed deliberate and simultaneous play of several unsynchronized tape loops, achieving microtonal dischord. That same year, Dorobisz wrote “Gretsch Pattern," a piece for electric guitar, followed by the Electro series.

Dorobisz' earlier works were composed in France and Germany between 1974 and 1980. Then, in 1984, upon invitation by composer Lucien Goethals, Director of Ghent's IPEM (Institute for Psychoacoustics and Electronic Music), Dorobisz at 29, relocated to Belgium where he scored, " Kontrapunkt", " le Gai savoir ", " L'orpheon de Jade ","Souprematika," winning the International Electro-acoustic Award at the Bourges Festival (1986). He continued research at the Institute's studio until 1987.

After leaving IPEM, Dorobisz created additional pieces: "Alice de l'autre cote du miroir," performed live at the Lille Opera House, " Luminis ", "Narvik" for orchestra, "Le serpent d'or" cello counterpoint, "String Quartet N°2", "Treblinka" for orchestra, and "Autres directions," a recorded entry for the Seoul Computer Music Festival in 1997. "Geometria " at : The Sound of Israel in Berlin, 1997 ; "3+11", at the International Music Conference in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA ; in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA....etc. The latter was performed once more between 2003-2006 at The Auditorium, in Lille, France with the Computer Music Ensemble.

The essence of Dorobisz' work fosters a synesthetic experience to which music transcends sound, repetitive music, computer music, and art transcends images. The interplay between imaginary landscapes and sound spaces gives ears and eyes another vision of contemporary music, form the talents of a painter who is both an architect and artist-composer.
When asked by an American music critic what it was like to create both visual art and also music, he responded: "What's the difference? I'm either painting on time or painting on a canvas."
His work is multiple, protean, plastic and conceptual. From Dorobisz' first electronic experiments to his string quartets, his music never leaves the listener indifferent. Patrick Dorobisz lives in Belgium in the province of West Flanders, where he continues his musical research around piano and computer with his partner : pianist
Veronique Vanhoucke

I encode my MP3 files using variable bit rates for maximum audio quality and smaller file sizes, aiming at an average of 256 kilobits per second (kbps). Using a variable bit rate allows us to allocate a higher bit rate to the more complex sections of music files while using a smaller bit rate for the less complex sections.
The average of these rates is then calculated to produce an average bit rate for the entire file that represents the overall sound quality. Some of my content is encoded using a constant bit rate of 256 kbps. This content will have the same excellent audio quality at a slightly larger file size.
Album cover art is included buying an album.
