Interests

  • General

    I have more interests and hobbies than I know what to do with sometimes. Top on my list is reading. It's my sanctuary and I try to take at least a few minutes every day to enjoy it. I love the water-the ocean, a stream, really doesn't matter. It's soothing and relaxing to me. I love to walk on the beach, especially after a storm. I find marine life fascinating to watch and to learn about. I can spend hours watching jelly fish float around. I also love stargazing. I think the night sky is one of the most beautiful sights and celestial events are magnificent. Some day I hope to see the northern lights or watch a meteor shower in person.

    I spend quite a bit of time studying topics I'm interested in. It allows me to combine reading with my other interests. I recently have gone back to school and am loving every minute of it. I'm working towards my BA in Social Sciences and it's a combination of a lot of the things I love to study, such as psychology, anthropology, and history. I'm not sure yet which direction I will take once I've graduated, but one of the options I'm looking at is going into social services either working with domestic violence victims or with parents of children with special needs. My experiences in both those areas I believe would allow me to have a unique ability to empathize with people. Just having someone know what it's like to deal with the struggles you're dealing with can have a powerful effect.

    I also find religion a fascinating topic. I would not consider myself a religious person, although I was raised to be. I struggle with the concept of faith-putting my trust blindly into something I cannot prove or see evidence of doesn't seem to be in my makeup. I absolutely respect the beliefs of others (as long as it doesn't involve hurting yourself or someone else) and am always interested in hearing why people have chosen to believe in the things they do. It seems so many people will follow one religion or another simply because that's what they were taught as a child. They never think to question what they were told, but I firmly believe it's important to do so, even if the purpose is only to solidify your own beliefs.

  • Music

    I have recently become acutely aware that my knowledge of music is sadly limited. I am going to branch out and listen to some new artists and broaden my horizons some. I know there are other artists out there I would love. But for now, these are the artists I listen to most often.

  • Movies

    My tastes in movies is hugely ecclectic. I usually will go for the shoot 'em up action flicks before a drama or a chick flick, but really I like them all. Except the gory movies where the whole point is to see people get chopped up-I can do without that. I'm a suspense thriller junkie though and love movies that play with your mind. And I'm a major (good) sci-fi/fantasy fan. I've listed just a few movies I really liked, as well as some actors and actresses that I enjoy. Any movie with these people in it I'm likely to go see.

  • Television

    Almost all of my favorite shows have run their course. BSG was the most recent one to end (sniff, sniff), so I'm just catching re-runs and collecting some of them on DVD. There are a couple of new series coming out (Caprica and Stargate Universe) and I'm anxious to see if they're any good.

  • Books

    I'm an avid reader-I love having my nose stuck in a book. I'm trying to add in new authors, but that will be tough this year since James Rollins is coming out with 3 new books and Terry Brooks has a couple coming out as well. Yes I have the calender marked for release dates!!
