  • Bio

My name is Szabolcs Matyas. I started playing guitar when I was 13. My only teacher was a Hungarian gipsy jazz player, László Gábor. As for many of other guitarists at this time, my first hero was Ritchie Blackmore. Later I went through the whole modern rock stuff and discovered the music of Allan Holdsworth too. I wanted to be the fastest guitar player until I saw Shawn Lane (RIP). These days I am impressed by the spirit of Gary Moore and Jimi Hendrix. My biggest Hungarian influences are István Alapi, Zoltán Fábián, Péter Lukács, Tamás Szekeres, Tibor Tátrai, Géza Fehér, Miklós Birta, Nándor Váczy and Zoltán Fejes. You can find a few of them among my top friends. My former band, Notre Dame (1989-1997) has won a lot of competition for young talents and I was the winner of upcoming young guitarists' competition in 1992. Thanks to the friendship of Hungarian guitar virtuoso, István Alapi I became the guitarist of the popular soft rock band, Azok a Fiúk in 1994. Unfortunatelly, this period has not lasted too long. New musical trends swept away most of Hungarian rock bands in the middle of 90's. I joined my recent band, Hot Shot in 1998. The latest line-up started to work together in 2010. Besides Hot Shot I have appeared in different prog rock projects (Omaha, Catwalk, Mutatványosok, Loyal Human) and played some guest solos (among Keiko Kumagai, Chris Brooks, Zoltán Fábián, István Alapi, Sándor Szabó) on an upcoming international prog rock album (The Goddess of Nemesis Project: The Play is the Thing). More recently I have jammed several times with the Hungarian Gary Moore Tribute Band, Empty Rooms. My gears to date: 1. Guitars: Suhr Standard, PRS Custom 24, Ibanez AT300AV, Ibanez JEM 7VBK, Godin xtSA, Schecter Jeff Loomis Model (7 string), Hofner Shorty (modified by Zsolt) travel guitar 2. Amps: Marshall JVM 410 Head, Line6 DT 50 212 3. Cabinet: Marshall 1960A, Marshall JVMC 212, Atomic Reactor FR 3. Effects, accessories: Fractal Audio Axe-Fx Ultra, Line6 HD 500, Digitech GSP1101, Rocktron Expression, Morley Bad Horsie II. wah, Axon AX100 MKII. Guitar to MIDI Controller, Palmer PDI-03L16, Boss OD-3, Boss DS-1, Rocktron Midi Mate, Digitech Control2, Fractal Audio MFC-101, Furman PF-Pro R, ISP Decimator Pro Rack G, Ebow-Plus, Dava Jazz Grip Gel picks, Ernie Ball and PRS strings 4.
