The start of the new year has once again proven that pop fare is wearing thin in the states. But then Destiny’s Child and Justin Timberlake announced their return to music this year and everything changed. Timberlake will release his new song on Jan. 14, and Destiny on Jan. 29 (with a sneak peak circulating). In addition to these acts, there is Something New from a British girl group that will fit right in on Top 40 radio.

Destiny’s Child, Nuclear – Listen on Mashable
Slowly coming back together after breaking up in 2005, they’re back with Nuclear, a sensual R&B track that is a welcome return for the trio. The group nestles back into their groove with soft vocals and a nice harmony that die-hard fans will enjoy. The only new song recorded for their compilation album “Love Songs,” it would have been nice to get a more upbeat track to announce their return, but oh well.

Girls Aloud, Something New – Listen
There certainly is something new in the British Invasion, and it’s called Girls Aloud. With building commercial success in the states, Something New sounds like the first hit for the British quintet. The perfect combination of strong vocals and a dance beat, it’s infectious and poppy without being annoyingly overpowering. Something New speaks volumes against pop fare from One Direction and The Wanted. As the lyrics state, “Tell me can you handle that? Cuz we’re the leaders of the pack.”

Willy Moon, Yeah Yeah- Listen
Featured in Apple iPod commercials, Yeah Yeah could benefit from its use in the ads just like Alex Clare’s Too Close did after being used in a Microsoft commercial. Based on this track alone, Willy Moon is the English equivalent to Bruno Mars; old school flare with a modern pop/R&B twist. Yeah Yeah treads on the sound of ’90s party anthems alongside funky rap/pop vocals. It’s a small nugget of a song that booms with energy.

Even more amazing, she keeps him around and doesn’t furiously run away screaming and/or kill him. But how could she say no to that face? OK, it’d actually be pretty easy to say no to that face.

So here’s what we know about John Dies at the End: John and his friend take some crazy drug called soy sauce, a bunch of really, really weird stuff happens and (presumably) John dies at the end. This clip doesn’t really do much to clarify things, but it does serve as a warning that if a Rastafarian offers you drugs, you should probably decline.

Arnold’s first starring role since he became Governor of California still looks like it could go either way. But the red-band trailer at least promises that the movie is going to be super bloody and violent. Which is really all you can ask out of a movie like that, right?

Small Apartments

Rebel Wilson becomes a punk rocker, Dolph Lundgren becomes a living Ken doll and Matt Lucas becomes someone who vaguely resembles the creepy Bjork stalker. I’m kind of at a loss for words here other than the fact that this movie seems to strike a pretty amazing balance between incredibly disturbing and incredibly hilarious.

Much to the chagrin of parents everywhere, we’ve got another Superbad-esque coming of age story that is going to inspire an entire generation of young adults to go out and get blackout drunk. In other news, Jeff Chang seems to have the worst friends in the world, based on the number of times you hear “did we just kill Jeff Chang?” in a two minute trailer.

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters

Famke Janssen: hot. Famke Janssen as white skinned, blue-eyed witch monster: even hotter? In the first official clip released from the Hansel and Gretel re-imagining, Janssen reveals herself as the witch who lured the siblings into the ill-fated gingerbread house.

Trance

To be honest, if you had explained the plot of Trance to me, I probably would’ve pretty lukewarm. Starring James McAvoy, Rosario Dawson and the bad guy from Ocean’s Twelve, the trailer isn’t so much about what happens as how it’s presented. Only time will tell if this was simply slick editing with the trailer or the makings of a classic, but for now, I’m intrigued.

Los Angeles musician Nick Waterhouse has been making waves over the last year, urging attention with his soulful, bluesy numbers. Although Waterhouse has largely been contained to the hipster indie rock scene so far, we’re pretty confident that he has what it takes to break into the mainstream in 2013, which is why we think you should jump on board while it’s still possible to tell your friends you were one of his original fans.

Waterhouse, who started his music career playing in the group Intelligista in the early ’00s, released his debut single in 2010. The number, “Some Place,” was released on the musician’s own label, PRES, and was featured as a limited edition pressed vinyl. Since then Waterhouse, then based in San Francisco, has performed with artists like Ty Segall, The Strange Boys and The Allah-Las. The singer moved to LA last year and released his debut album Time’s All Gone in May via Innovative Leisure Records.

The musician has been hailed for his throwback sound, which culls together old influences in a new way. LA Weekly called Waterhouse “The Young Man Who Makes Old R&B,” offering comparisons to Amy Winehouse and Sharon Jones. Waterhouse recently told the Chicago Tribune of his musical influences, “I’m almost embarrassed to say it, but it’s this underlying feel or tone of the blues. It’s melancholy, and sometimes it swings like hell, or it sounds so tough. It’s about a greater cosmic feeling that even when you’re happy you have something on your mind.”

Waterhouse added of his album, “When I was making the record, I was making exactly what I wanted to make. It’s not about, ‘You’re into old stuff.’ It’s a matter of taste. It’s a personal statement about my life. I see people playing music indebted to other times and never felt like I fit in with them, because it sounds mannered to me, not as direct. I started thinking about it, too. The only time when I stop thinking is when I’m playing. That’s why I realized I would be OK when I made ‘Some Place.’ It’s more that I felt like I didn’t have any other choice.”

Ke$ha’s brand new video for her latest single features even more costume changes than One Direction’s clip. The singer loses some of her usually overdone makeup and replaces it with, uh, furries. We’re not even really sure how to explain the storyline, but it seems like another bizarrely fun video to add to Ke$ha’s cache.

Zedd – “Clarity”

In Zedd’s new clip, the young DJ gives his single a slick, glossy visual to match. The video mixes live action narrative with hypnotic computer visuals that ultimately come together to create a surreal, appropriately strange landscape. This is definitely one of the best of the week – especially if you’re into psychedelic drugs.

Nelly Furtado might not seem like the most relevant pop star these days, but she certainly looks good in this new clip for her single “Waiting For the Night.” The Latin-inspired, black and white video features Furtado embracing her cultural roots – as well as some cool masked backup dancers.

Lil B – “I Love You”
.

Lil B’s new slow jam (remember he’s an indie rock artist now) is incredibly weird, but somehow comes together. In the clip, Lil B wanders around in a pet store, holds some mice, admires some reptiles and basically gets really emo. The last minute consists of the artist just crying and telling the camera how much love he has to spread. It’s actually really endearing, in case you need an end of the week pickup.

2AM Club – “Too Fucked Up To Call”

This lo-fi visual for 2AM Club’s new track from their upcoming second album is like a viral video you might send your friend. The intimate, homemade-looking shots lend a genuine air to the track, which reminiscences about love lost (or something like that). Either way it’s a good introduction – or re-introduction – to the pop group.

Robert Delong – “Global Concepts”
.

Up-and-coming electronic artist Robert Delong gets artsy in his new video for single “Global Concepts,” an LCD Soundsystem-ish number. Here Delong prances around in some cool looking lights, smacks a snare drum and finds a way to incorporate the word “fuck” into a radio single more than once. It’s an edgy, compelling video that really does make us nostalgic for LCD Soundsystem circa 2006.

Charli XCX – “You (Ha Ha Ha)”
.

Despite the massive surge of gun violence in the U.S. lately, Charli XCX employs machine guns as her weapon of choice in this new video. The singer wrote of the clip, “We’d been heavily influenced by the world of Tumblr superstars and the quick click, pop-tastic world of the internet in my previous videos, so this time we decided to look elsewhere. We’d been watching a lot of grindhouse movies, mostly with strong female leads like The Pom Pom Girls and Coffy, and there seemed to be a bizarre cross over from that genre of cinema and today’s world of pop. Shooting the video in a gun factory seemed like the perfect grindhouse setting for a kick ass, girl power story, with super pretty girls swapping the bullets for lipstick. Cute!” Sure.

(2003) “Crazy in Love” feat Jay-Z

When Beyonce dropped “Crazy in Love,” the first single off her debut album, Dangerously in Love, it had already become clear that the singer was fully shedding her Destiny’s Child roots and going solo; she’d already starred opposite Mike Meyers in Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, and had begun racking up feature spots in other artist’s songs, including a memorable turn opposite her future husband Jay-Z on his “‘03 Bonnie & Clyde.” But it was “Crazy in Love,” a Chi Lites-sampling, 70’s-style funk-pop affair, that signaled her true arrival as a solo contender. The track, featuring a suave Jay-Z verse, topped the Hot 100, and would go on to  garner the singer a pair of Grammy Awards. Furthermore, the massive success of “Crazy in Love” ignited buzz surrounding her debut album, rocketing it to multi-platinum status and adding fuel to the burning fire of her growing legend.

(2006) “Irreplaceable”
.
Following her scoring a pair of Number One singles on her debut, and then another with ” Check on It” off her aptly titled compilation album, #1’s, Beyonce in 2005 returned to the studio to cook up her much-anticipated second full-length album. Thanks to her previous successes, B’Day, as her 2006 sophomore album would be titled, allowed the now-full-fledged pop star to take additional creative risks. The album’s first two singles, “Deja Vu” and “Ring the Alarm” respectively, each achieved commercial success. But it was “Irreplaceable,” a mid-tempo ballad originally envisioned by its writer, Ne-Yo, as a country-western song, and then  later molded into his final R&B vision,that solidified Beyonce’s second effort as a critical success. The song reached the top of the charts, was nominated for Record of the Year at the Grammy Awards and became the most successful-selling single in the US in 2007.

(2008) “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)”

By 2008 Beyonce had long been in the public eye, something that increased with her massively growing popularity. But an oft-untold fact was that she long considered herself to be unnaturally shy and timid. It was this then that inspired the pop star to adopt her Sasha Fierce alter-ego, the namesake for her third album I Am…Sasha Fierce. Through the facade of Sasha, Beyonce was able to enact her most brash creative endeavors. Case in point was the album’s second single “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” (although, in actuality it was released simultaneously with the double-platinum selling ballad “If I Were a Boy”). The girl-power anthem, an up-beat, staccato dance-pop gem that quickly hit Number One, soon took on a life of its own: girls everywhere were telling their men to “put a ring on it” or hit the road. And yes, it also had a killer music video (a widely felt opinion of which Kanye West infamously made sure the world understood).

(2011) “Countdown”
.
In what was fast becoming a reliable pattern, three years after releasing Sasha Fierce Beyonce returned with her fourth album, appropriately titled 4. In many ways, the album was the singer’s most assured to date: for it Beyonce blatantly incorporated wide-ranging elements from pop and hip-hop to 70’s soul and jazz. And in typical fashion, 4 was accompanied by pure strokes of creative genius for music videos. The standout was undoubtedly the video for “Countdown,” in which Beyonce channels cross-generational fashion influences, ranging from ’60’s mod to Flashdance-inspired ’80’s. Per usual, the video was proof of Beyonce’s fearlessness in her creative decisions. It’s this fearlessness, in fact, that’s come to characterize her ascent up the music-industry ladder over the past decade. And while the past year has seen her taking time off to raise her newborn child, with this week’s news of new Beyonce music, something tells us to hold on tight for what Queen B has in store.

Singer-songwriter Kelly Clarkson stopped by Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt prior to Christmas to sing and celebrate the season with patients, staff and families through Musicians on Call (MOC) Nashville and performed an acoustic set in the Children’s Hospital Theatre. The songstress led the packed room in a sing-along of her favorite holiday carols including “Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer,” “White Christmas,” and “All I Want for Christmas is You.” Clarkson encouraged singing and dancing, and the children were happy to oblige. Following the show, the kind-hearted entertainer generously offered to visit the rooms of patients unable to attend.

The school was named in his honor after his $200 million unrestricted gift in 2002. With this recent gift, Geffen’s total philanthropic support to UCLA exceeds $300 million, making him the largest individual donor to UCLA and to any single UC campus.

We hope that her story and “Safe Haven” can serve as a reminder that those facing similar wrongdoing should seek help.

One Direction, Kiss You – Listen
Following a string of hits from their two albums released last year, their next single Kiss You, will be sure to continue the trend. Kiss You is so wonderfully poppy and fun that fans could make this the first big hit of 2013. True to their teen pop themes about love, this is more exciting and energetic than their other singles thanks to a heavier guitar/synth track. One Direction’s songs have evolved from flattery to aggressive lovers, so let them kiss you.

Little Mix, DNA – Watch on YouTube
Little Mix could be the first British girl group to take charge in the States since the Spice Girls. Their booming voices and club/pop sound would fit right in with the American music scene and DNA would be the perfect first release for them here. Even though the song is ripe with cheesy biology references, DNA sounds like power hits from Destiny’s Child’s golden era. It’s sexy yet playful at the same time. Given the proper release in the States, DNA would be a perfect song to blast on the radio.

Anne Hathaway, I Dreamed a Dream- Listen
Songs from movie musicals sometimes go on to be bigger than expected. Madonna’s version of Don’t Cry For Me Argentina from “Evita” hit the top 10, and Breaking Free from “High School Musical” peaked at No. 4. With repetition in the film’s promotional material, Hathaway has revitalized this Broadway power ballad with much success in “Les Misérables.” The track is the most popular from the film’s soundtrack, entering at No. 69 on Billboard. Add in the Oscar buzz her performance is generating and it could be her first hit as a singer.

Who’s the bigger badass, Ryan Gosling or Josh Brolin? On the one hand, Ryan Gosling dumps a vial on acid on a gangster’s leg. On the other hand, Josh Brolin beats up three gangsters using a table. Either way, it seems like Warner Brothers is making sure that these two clips send a message: there’s going to be a hell of a lot of violence in this movie, plus Emma Stone in backless and shoulder-less dresses, which is basically the 1940’s equivalent to walking around in a g-string.

The Last Stand

Say what you want about Arnold, Sylvester Stallone and the rest of the Expendables crew, at least they’re self-aware. Sure, it’s kind of awesome for nostalgia’s sake to watch them continue to beat up bad guys, but it’s gotta be taken with a grain of salt. The guy is almost 70 for crying out loud! Maybe he doesn’t exude the same badassery that he did in his Predator days, but it wouldn’t be believable if he still carried himself anyways.

Side Effects

A couple’s lives (Rooney Mara and Channing Tatum) begin to unravel when Mara’s psychiatrist (Jude Law) gives her a perscription drug that has some unexpected side effects. Are we sure he wasn’t giving her bath salts? Is this really Steven Soderberg’s final film? Personally, I’d rather see Channing Tatum being funny than being serious, but this does look pretty good.

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters

Red-band trailer! That means either someone gets naked or there’s a lot of curing (sorry to burst your bubble, but in this case it’s just the latter). 2013 looks like it’s going to be the year of the fairy tale remake, with this, Oz The Great and Powerful and Jack the Giant Slayer all coming to theaters around the same time. Will this one be the best? Not sure at this point, but it certainly looks like it’s going to be the most “adult” (aka violent).

Evil Dead

Another red-band! Again, no nudity, but there’s blood. Lots and lots of blood. And evil spirits and cutting knives along your tongue and all sorts of other terrible stuff. Look, you probably already know if you want to see this movie (and thus, this trailer) or not. If you’re a wuss like me, stay away. Or watch in a room with a lot of light.

The Canyons

Can you think of a more unlikeable pair than Brett Easton Ellis and Lindsay Lohan? Any comeback momentum Lohan was trying to gain was quickly squashed by Liz & Dick, with reviews ranging from “so bad it’s good” to “completely and utterly unwatchable.” But hey, I don’t want to disparage the film too much, for fear of Easton Ellis going on an insane Twitter rant against me. Oh wait, I’m not a woman, so I don’t have to worry. Phew. Thanks Brett, for being a sexist pig.

A Good Day to Die Hard

Call me crazy, but it doesn’t seem as far-fetched to see Bruce Willis galavanting around with a machine gun as it does with Arnold Schwarzenegger. Maybe he’s aged a little better. Or maybe it’s because he and his housekeeper, err, nevermind. With John McClane’s son coming into the fold it looks like Willis is ready to pass the torch and let the Die Hard franchise continue with one or two poorly done movies starring Jai Courtney that ultimately ends going straight to DVD.

A Haunted House

Do you have a bong in your room? That’s pretty much the litmus test for the Wayans brothers’ latest. Truth be told, I was kind of lukewarm on this one until I found out that Nick Swardson was involved, now I’m mildly intrigued. Regardless, I have a feeling that this film will do very well in Colorado.

I kept waiting for Terrence Stamp to start flying around, shooting lasers out of his eyes while yelling “kneel before Zod.” Alas, that never happened.

Porter Robinson gained a lot of momentum in the EDM scene throughout 2012, but 2013 seems to be when the DJ/producer will really come into his own. Robinson, who released his album Spitfire on Skrillex’s OWSLA label, also received attention for remixing Lady Gaga’s “The Edge of Glory.”

Robinson hails from Chapel Hill, NC, where he started producing in his teens. Now 20 years old, he initially produced music under the moniker Ekowraith. The DJ signed with OWSLA in 2011 and released his debut Spitfire the same year. Robinson toured with Skrillex throughout 2011 and appeared at numerous festivals, including Electric Daisy and Ultra Music Festival.

The DJ unveiled a new version of Spitfire with bonus remixes in early 2012, heralded by single “Language.” The track went to No. 1 on Beatport and iTunes’ Dance chart. Robinson performed at nearly every festival in 2012, including Coachella, Ultra, Lollapalooza and Electric Zoo, opening his fanbase up beyond the EDM scene. Robinson has said of his sound, “When I first started getting fans, I was known for and wanted to make really complex, glitchy, detailed music, because at that time the prevalent style of house music on Beatport and in the US was Dutch house – I wanted to do something that was more complicated, more rebellious. Now that more complex sound has also gone mainstream after people like Wolfgang Gartner, Deadmau5 and myself starting making and playing it. Lately I’m enjoying beautiful stuff – I’m listening to way more bands than I’ve ever listened to before (like 2 Door Cinema Club, Lemaitre, Phoenix, more disco-edged stuff), and it’s having a really positive effect on the music I’m writing and allowing me to do something fresh.”

Robinson’s latest single is “Easy,” which features Mat Zo. The DJ has yet to announce plans for an upcoming full-length album, however it’s likely that he will release one sometime this year. Robinson recently said, “I’m in the process of writing another EP at the moment and I’ve just finished a track with Mat Zo. I’m really fond of it – it’s a mix of ‘Language’-style sounds and disco sounds with a soulful vocal. It’s a charming track and really fun, it’s an homage to Daft Punk because their second album ‘Discovery’ is my favourite album of all time and Mat’s too. So we thought, let’s write something like that but with some trance/progressive sounds in the mix. It’s kind of a thrill ride… I also have some really big concepts in mind for 2013 – but unfortunately I can’t really talk about those yet!”

(1983) “Runaway”
.
In 1982, John Bongiovi was a struggling teenage songwriter living in New Jersey. It’s also when he first planted the seeds for his future success. Working part-time at a recording studio in Manhattan, Bongiovi — he would later change his surname to “Bon Jovi” for commercial appeal — recorded a demo of a song titled “Runaway,” that would ironically end up becoming his future band’s first commercial hit. The young singer soon convinced local radio stations to play his song, after which record labels began taking notice. In no time he’d recruited a backing band — consisting of bassist Alec John Such, guitarist Dave Sabo, and drummer David Bryan — and subsequently got signed to Mercury Records. (Sabo would soon be replaced by current guitarist Richie Sambora). The band proceeded to record their eponymous debut album under their new name, Bon Jovi. Leading the band’s charge into the mainstream was”Runaway,” that chugging pop-metal concoction Bon Jovi had created a few years back, and the same song that would rocket his new band onto the Billboard charts where the song hit Number 39 on the Billboard Hot 100.

(1986) “Livin’ On A Prayer”
.
In the wake of their successful, albeit hardly groundbreaking debut, Bon Jovi returned to the stdio to cook up their second album, 1985’s 7800° Fahrenheit . Although the new record was the first Bon Jovi release to be certified gold, and even though it produced a slew of hit singles, all of this would pale in comparison to the band’s third and unarguably most famous release. Slippery When Wet, released in 1986 and created with the help of accomplished songwriter Desmond Child and producer Bruce Fairbairn, elevated Bon Jovi to heights previously unknown. Armed by now-iconic singles “Livin’ On A Prayer,” “You Give Love A Bad Name” and “Dead Or Alive,” the album reached Number One on the Billboard charts (as did “Prayer” and “Bad Name”). The momentously successful album would also help the band garner massive monetary rewards: their “Tour Without End” grossed upwards of $28 million.

(1994) “Always”
.
What Bon Jovi proved over the remainder of the 80s was that their success was no fluke: the band continued to churn out chart-topping albums (1988’s New Jersey and 1992’s Keep The Faith, a noticeably more mature sound for the band). But their next mega-single came in the form of “Always,” a heart-wrenching ballad on the band’s 1994 greatest-hits album Cross Road. The song was a powerhouse: “Always” stayed in the Billboard Top Ten for six months. Only a few years later, after releasing 1995’s These Days, and still at the apex of their popularity, the band  took a multi-year hiatus.

(2000) “It’s My Life”
.
After reuniting in 1999 to record “Real Life” for the film EdTV, Bon Jovi immediately began working on its comeback album, 2000’s Crush. And as they had always done, Bon Jovi came out swinging big: the album’s lead single “It’s My Life” was a massive arena anthem that quickly found its way onto pop radio. The song also helped introduce Bon Jovi to a new, younger generation and helped score the band Grammy nominations for Best Rock Album and Best Rock Performance. What’s more, Crush helped reenergize Bon Jovi to continue plowing forward into the new millennium. Over the past decade the band has released four super-successful albums (Bounce, Have A Nice Day, Lost Highway, The Circle) and plan to release their twelfth album, tentatively titled What About Now?, later this year. As they’ve proven time and again, Bon Jovi aren’t done rocking.

U.K. group The Horrors have been around for several years, but it’s never too late to jump on a cool group’s bandwagon. The band, who hails from Southend-on-Sea, released their debut album, Strange House, in 2007, pairing gothic aesthetics with garage rock and New Wave sounds. The Horrors’ raucous flagship single, “Sheena Is a Parasite,” got a lot of attention and acclaim, and brought the group a significant amount of press in the States.

The band’s second album, Primary Colours, followed in 2009 via XL Recordings, where the group signed after the release of their debut. Skying, the band’s third disc, arrived in 2011. The group has toured with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Florence and the Machine and Arctic Monkeys.

So why we telling you about the band now? The Horrors have just unleashed a brand digital new remix set, Higher, which will be released in physical format in March. The set collects new versions of numbers from Skying and features remixes from Blanck Mass and Peaking Lights. Band member Tom Furse said of the collection, “We were driving through the deserts of California when we hatched the plan… the box soon grew into an impressive collection of sonic tapestries and hypnotic grooves and it became apparent that this was no longer about the singles. It was now about this new music which had used the different elements of Skying as a springboard to other ideas. We encouraged everyone involved to be as obtuse as possible, to get as far away from the original source material as they could.” Check out the remixes below:

Capital STEEZ, a rapper in New York crew Pro Era, which also includes Joey Bada$$, died on Christmas Eve, according to reports. Bada$$ confirmed the news that the 19-year-old rapper, born Jamal Dewar, had passed away, writing on Twitter, “This unfortunate xmas eve.. Lost a best friend, a brother, a pro, a partner. Letting go is never easy.. May ur soul rest in peace Jamal.”

STEEZ has appeared on various Pro Era projects, including Joey Bada$$’s recent Survival Tactics and the brand new Pro Era mixtape Peep the Aprocalypse. STEEZ also released a solo mixtape, Amerikkkan Korruption, earlier this year. The rapper wrote about his mixtape, “AMERIKKKAN KORRUPTION came about during a time in my high school years where everyone was following fads and trying to fit in and naturally I did the same. It got to a certain point where I asked myself why? I started to open my eyes, I was a slave to television, media, and the daily motions of what we call the AMERIKKKAN Dream. My only intentions are to get the AMERIKKKAN Public to open up that 3rd eye just a little bit, and from there we ALL can grow.”

The day after STEEZ’s passing, a sad message appeared on the rapper’s Twitter page reading “The end.” There is no confirmed cause of death at this time, however reports suggest that the death was a suicide. Our thoughts are with STEEZ’s family and friends in this difficult time.
